Polar Bear ❄️

Inktober prompt : legend

The Inuit believed that Nanuk, the polar bear, was powerful and mighty and would worship this great bear because they believed that he decided if the hunters would be successful.

Legend says that if a dead polar bear was treated properly by the hunter, it would share the good news with other bears so they would be eager to be killed by him. Bears would stay away from hunters who failed to pay respect.

Even though they were hunted there was a deep respect, certainly no danger of them being wiped out as a species. Now, the potential loss of their sea ice habitat resulting from climate change, polar bears have been listed as a threatened species since 2008. Unless something changes they could well become legendary creatures completely.
