Mobile phone drawing – part III(.5)

Sorry, on the last blog post I said it’s my last on mobile phone sketching for a while.

Well I thought it worthwhile doing a little comparison as a brief follow up. I set a timer and drew for 30 mins with each (phone and sketchbook).

As you can see, I didn’t even finish on the phone. With the sketchbook I actually had too much time and started adding unnecessary details – as is usual with a lot of drawings, knowing when to stop and how little detail to put in is important. The drawing was better several minutes before.

As mentioned in the previous post, the physical experience of making marks on paper (and smudging on my hands) has it’s own reward that digital sketching can’t match.

  1. I have never attempted to sketch on and iPhone or iPad. I don’t know if I could. I think I would miss the feel and feedback that I get from pen and paper. I assume you have to do a lot of zooming in and out on the phone to put together a sketch?

    • Indeed you do, whilst I did have a stylus to hand it didn’t work for some reason so I reverted to ‘finger painting’. Even if the stylus worked it’s still about 5mm wide and drawing on a 5cm wide screen so yes, zooming is essential. The previous posts highlight some of the pitfalls and benefits (yep, there are some!)
